It all started when I went to a concert three weeks ago with my buddy Michael Regan. As we were driving to the concert, he turned me on to a band from the 70's that I could not believe I’ve never even heard of. The name of the band was Legs Diamond, and I thought: "That is sort of a crazy name! How did they think about a name like that?" After that, I quickly forgot about the name and enjoyed my newfound music.
Just two short weeks later, my wife and I went to the Mob Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada. I was captivated by all of the nicknames that the different mobsters were given. As I was scanning through the 30 to 40 pictures of mobsters, I came across a person by the name of "Jack Diamond", also known as Legs. All the sudden, I realized his nickname was Legs Diamond, and I had cracked the case of where this band had gotten their name from!
That experience got me thinking about the origins of all rock band names in general. About another two weeks later, I was listening to the new Rolling Stones album (which by the way is fantastic). Of course, I’ve listened to them since the late 60's and never gave a thought to what the origin of their name was. While I was driving in my car one day listening to them, I thought of the answer after 60 years. "Wait a minute! It’s so obvious! It’s ridiculous rock ‘n’ roll, a rock rolling, the essence is a Rolling Stone!" How easy was that to crack, and I’ve never even given it a second thought.
I quickly called my buddy Cleve Kennelly, and we started talking about how fun it would be to put down a collection of the origins of rock and roll’s greatest band names ever. That idea actually morphed into something much more, and now we have this website and a book that will be released within the next year.
I hope you enjoy everything on this website!
